Who we are in laymen’s terms
AAGO is a group of general dentists and orthodontists who have
a unique way of solving orthodontic and bite problems.
Our treatment has often been a solution for patients who wish
to avoid jaw surgery or taking teeth out.
Gnathology: “gnathos” means “jaw” in Greek,
and dentists who study gnathology do everything from simple fillings
to advanced bite or orthodontic with an eye to how the treatment
will affect the jaw, and how the jaw affects the treatment. A “gnathological
bite” has special characteristics. For the most part, this
specialized discipline is not taught in dental schools.
1. The jaw alignment is coordinated with the bite.
2. The teeth all meet evenly.
3. The front teeth protect the back teeth.
4. The back teeth do not touch when the teeth are not all the way
together.
5. Cusps of a back tooth fit into depressions (fossae) of the opposing
tooth.
Orthopedics: the correction or prevention of skeletal deformities.
Example: Gnathologic orthopedics would be more likely to modify
the bone shape or position to allow the ideal bite and facial results.
What we don’t do: Take teeth out, instead of changing the
shape of the bone.
For thirty years AAGO members have assumed leadership roles in the
exploration and development of innovative techniques and approaches
to the treatment of orthodontic problems for both the child and
the adult patient. In our treatments, we strive to preserve the
patient’s natural dentition with non-extraction orthopedic
techniques and holistic concepts that help develop the jaws to accommodate
all of the patient’s permanent teeth. We avoid invasive procedures
such as extraction and orthognathic surgery whenever possible.
